Ten Black Dots | Donald Crews Printable Companion pack

One of my most popular blog posts on this site to this day is still my Ten Black Dots post from when my oldest was in pre-K:

All the way back from 2013. Time flies! I couldn’t find many free printables to go along with the book, so we ended up using a TPT ten frame packet and I quickly did up some images for cutting practice. Since my readers liked that post so much, I figured I would make a new post to go along with this book.

I’ve also created a playlist on the Home School on a Dime YouTube Channel. There’s a read aloud as well as a couple of easy classroom ideas. I’ll add more as I come across them.

Matching cards and clip cards

The first thing you’ll see in my packet is two sets of cards. One with black dots and the number words, and one with just the numerals on them. Use these for matching or memory games. For more advanced students you could cut the number words away from the dots so they can match those.

Next, we have a set of ten clip cards. To make any of these activities reusable, print them on cardstock and laminate.

Next we have some prewriting practice where the student traces the strings on ten black balloons. These can also be laminated or slipped into shiny sheet protective for dry erase fun.

Cutting practice and crafts

I made a simple grid-style cutting practice sheet with a black dot on each square. If your child is good with fine motor skills already, they could alternatively try cutting around the circles themselves. If they’re not quite old enough for scissors, you can cut these out for your students so they can use them on the following pages.

Next, they can arrange the black dots to create a snoman’s face or wheels on a train. Alternatively, these can be used as playdough mats when laminated.

Practice writing numerals and number words

The “Counting Time” pages are for students to count the dots and write the number in the box. Does your little one need a little tracing help still? Add the numbers in highlighter so they can trace your writing.

The “Numbers” page is for them to practice counting and tracing the number words. These are important to start on as many of them are “sight words”(they don’t follow standard phonics rules).

Puzzles

The next two are puzzle pages. One train with six pieces and one boat with eight pieces. Each comes with an example so your student can use it as a guide if needed.

Roll, count, tally

The last page is “How Many Dots” where students tally how many times they roll each number.
